Hello

I'm Elaine, I'm a UK Pole Dance Instructor, teaching pole dancing in Surrey since 2005, and this is my Blog, where I put video-clips, pictures and articles as a resource for pole students (and sometimes just to let off steam, hehe). I try to post regularly, and would love to read any feedback so do post a comment.. Or add your email to get new posts. Enjoy :-)

Amazing & Funny Beach Pole Video :-)

What happens when your pole instructor suggests you might like to enter a pole competition, but you just happen to be on Honeymoon on a remote beach in Malaysia with no pole studios for miles (or countries probably) until the closing date?

Armed with the wonders of modern technology, a husband prepared to walk for miles in the midday heat in search of something pole-shaped, a pair of heels, some super pole tricks, and (eventually) a rather wonky makeshift pole, Sheri managed to put her competition entry together and here it is :-) Please click LIKE and feel free to share, to help her win!

 Good luck Sheri!! XX

Movement to increase upper back mobility

I have always had the stiffest upper back imaginable, and have long envied those able to perform beautiful back bends, while I tilt back like a plank of board.

I have recently found and have been following this video, and within one to two weeks, can vouch for a very significant increase in upper back flexibility. I have a foam roller, and have found that this works best. However according to Esther in the video, similar results can be achieved with a firmly rolled up towel. It hurt at first, enough to take the breath away as tight muscles were rolled over, but now there is no pain, only greater movement.

If you decide to follow this video, I hope it brings you the revolutionary results it brought me :-) x

The Olympics: London 2012

Four years ago, during the hand-over ceremony from Beijing to London, I wrote this: http://poledancinginpictures.blogspot.co.uk/2008/09/studio-pics-and-olym-pics-see-what-i.html

In 2012, I take it all back. Our opening ceremony was furthest from what I dreaded it would be (a kind of X-Factor in sportswear, with special effects provided by the main sponsors). Instead, Diversity and golden arches fireworks were nowhere to be seen, and we got a show which was a meaningful and true reflection of British history and a courageous stab at representing our very varied culture. Despite an absence of schmaltz, I had goosebumps up my arms and a lump in my throat at times, and howled with laughter when lofty institutions (the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Family) allowed themselves to be used with humour.

The effects were spectacular: the march of the Industrial Revolution over a pastoral landscape, with soaring towers, smoking factories and that amazingly clever forging of the Olympic rings (I couldn't help being reminded of Tolkein). Also the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron at the end. It was all very wonderful.

I truly felt very proud to be British, congratulations Danny Boyle, you achieved the near-impossible with a perfect balance of respect and irreverance. A knighthood surely follows!

The Olympics events themselves have gone smoothly so far and seem happily advert-free. I'm personally spoilt that several have taken place right on my doorstep. 2012 has been a brilliant year to be English.

Pole Thought for the Day: Climbing Trees in Heels

One of the reasons I love pole dancing is that it allows me to combine the childhood occupation of being a tomboy and climbing trees with that other thing little girls liked doing - dressing up in sparkly things and grown up shoes. Fun times :-)

Improve your pole dancing - squeeze a ball

Squeezing rubber stress balls or tennis balls is great for pole dancing. How?

1. The exercise will strengthen hands by working the muscles which flex the thumbs and fingers, therefore improving hand grip.

2. It exercises and strengthens the muscles of the forearms. Stronger forearm muscles will help support and stabilise the wrist joint. Therefore improving pole techniques (Split Grip) and positions (Handstands etc) which exert pressure on the wrist. This applies to spins like the Carousel or Cradle; and Inverted Aerial Holds like the Butterfly or Aysha, for example.

3. Therefore squeezing balls is great for strength building and injury prevention.

4. Technique - Squeeze and hold for 8-10 seconds, then release. Repeat a couple of times, enough to feel mild fatique, but never pain.

8 Ways to Get The Most From Your Pole Dancing Lessons

1. Wear Appropriate Gear

Depending on your Level, you'll need bare legs (at least knees at Level 1; as much as poss for Levels 3,4,5). Shorts and a vest top are best

Bring flat shoes and heels, so you have a choice, both have their pro's and cons. (There's a separate article on this, see links at bottom)

Basic Fireman Spin

Possibly one of the first spins you will learn in your pole dance journey!

Thursday, 23 June 2011

The Arch Back

A pole dance transition move, particularly good for finishing some spins, it helps a routine 'flow' and looks graceful.

Chair Spin

Looks graceful, almost as if the dancer is 'floating' around the pole but don't let this make you think it's an easy move! I teach this in my Beginners course, however towards the end, as it's definitely an 'advanced beginners' move. You need to call on your abs for support - they are essentially what's holding your legs up (or should be ;-p)

2. Pen and paper to write down inspired combinations or ideas, or draw funny stickmen to remember the moves by

Spring Pole Dance Classes in Surrey: Timetable Now Available

Hello and Happy New Year!

As we are already into double figures in January, it's a good time to announce our new Timetable of pole dancing classes for the next few months.

Level 1 and Level 2 classes are now available with the option of either:
- booking a progressive 6 week block / course, or
- individual weeks as preferred.

If you're looking to book occasional weeks rather than a course, then as a guide, any of the first 3 weeks of classes will suit complete beginners to pole dancing - each week we will learn a new mini pole routine from scratch; weeks 4-6 will require previous experience, these would also be good as 'Refresher' lessons.

Mixed level Intermediate-Advanced level classes continue to be available at some venues either weekly or a block of six as before.

Places at Kingston, Richmond, Epsom, Guildford and Sutton are available to book online on the 'Timetable' page at the Poleminx website.

The Poleminx shop is now equipped with various products to make your poling life easier - from the poles themselves, to pole dance shoes, grip cloths and pole mats - check it out at the Poleminx online store.

Hope to meet you soon and introduce the amazing fun and benefits of pole dancing!

Kind regards
Elaine

POLE CLINIC: HOW TO DO THE BASIC FIREMAN SPIN

The Fireman Spin is one of the first spins newcomers to pole dancing will probably learn as it's nice and easy and feels secure.

It's not too heavy on the upper arms as the legs are also keeping you on the pole, and squeezing in those abs will keep you upright and provide support to the rest of the body.

Here's a few tips on how to do a successful Basic Fireman Spin:

Halloween Pole Routine

Here's a short video of the final result of Our Halloween Special Pole Dancing Routine Class held in Richmond in October (warning - has sound!)

Not bad for an hour or so's work!

Winter Timetable - New Pole Classes & Courses

Hi, welcome to our Winter 2010 Newsletter, and thank you for signing up :-)

Just to let you know that our new Pole Dance Timetable for Nov / Dec / Jan is now live on the website, you can view the forthcoming range of classes, dates, times, prices, class and venue descriptions on the Timetable page, and also book your place securely online here.

Many people have asked that the usual 6 week courses at Level 1 and 2 are also available as weekly single lessons, due to the busy time of year around Christmas, when it's difficult to commit to a full 6 weeks. This is now in place at most venues, so you can either sign up for the course, or pick and choose the weeks you'd like to attend. Each class will focus on a new set of pole moves and a mini dance routine, so don't worry if you haven't done it before!

Lessons and courses are available at Epsom, Sutton, Richmond, Kingston and Guildford, ranging from Beginners to Advanced Level 5. There will be a break over Christmas.

There's a new page on the Poleminx website to give people new to pole dancing some background info what it's all about - if you have any suggestions or ideas what would be useful on there, please let me know, thank you!

The Pole Dance Halloween Routine Class in Richmond in October was a hoot, there's a short video of the end result here. Watch out for future themed pole classes :-)

We're planning a girly pole night out in early December - watch out for further details either on the website or on Facebook. All invited!

Hope to see you in a class soon, please contact me if you have any queries,

Kind regards
